This is special, says MK Dons Chairman on hosting Championship League Snooker at Stadium MK

Chairman Pete Winkelman believes hosting the Championship League Snooker tournament will be a ‘special’ moment for Stadium MK.

Sixty-four of the world’s top snooker players will compete at the Marshall Arena next month, as live UK sport returns for the first time since the Coronavirus lockdown began.

“We are thrilled to be one of the first places for live sport since Lockdown” Winkelman told ITV Anglia – ITV4 will be airing the tournament daily from June 1st.

“It’s been surreal at the stadium. It’s normally one of the most bustling places in the whole region, but it’s had nothing at all going on for weeks. It’s so great to be able to get back to doing something.

“This is special. It’s championship snooker, live on ITV to the whole nation and it’s happening at our place – it doesn’t get better than that.”

The Chairman continued: “It’s great for our business but I can’t take all the credit. There are people working a lot harder than me to make this happen.

“I am really proud and impressed with our staff. We are can-do people in Milton Keynes and we’re excited to be a part of this.

“There is a lot of work going on. Matchroom Sport have made all the impossible things possible but you can’t do that without the Government’s support and, locally, the council have been there too.

“There are strict guidelines we have to deliver on. Doing it safely was everybody’s mantra throughout the whole discussion.

“There will be things that will make it slightly different but live competition starts here.”
