EXCLUSIVE: There are currently 230 coronavirus patients at Milton Keynes Hospital

As of 9:30am this morning, there were 230 COVID-positive inpatients at Milton Keynes Hospital.

Cases at the hospital are rising rapidly, and just yesterday morning Professor Joe Harrison, CEO of MKUH, warned that the intensive care unit was "near to capacity".

The situation quickly changed as today he told MKFM that it is now "completely full".

Speaking in an MKFM news special, Professor Harrison discussed how the hospital has had to "extend" critical care to cope with the increase in demand, just like in the first wave, and has plans to further it if/when necessary.

He said: "The more you extend critical care, the more pressure that puts onto the staff having to look after these very sick patients."

It was also revealed that around 60% of all of the useable beds are being taken up by COVID patients.

Hospital admissions are rising alongside the number of cases meaning that the more people who have covid, the more people will subsequently be admitted to hospital with it.

Professor Harrison, and MKUH staff, are expecting the number of coronavirus patients to increase even more over the coming weeks.

Milton Keynes is said to have one of the highest infection rates in the South East, and nearly 500 cases were recorded yesterday.

Sadly, Milton Keynes Hospital has already seen more deaths in the second wave, compared to the first. In the past 28 days, 80 out of the total 566 coronavirus patients have passed away.

27 deaths have been recorded in the past two days, with fifteen being announced yesterday and twelve announced today

England is now in a third national lockdown in a bid to get these infection rates, and subsequent deaths, to drop. Therefore it is incredibly important to follow lockdown rules - stay at home, protect the NHS, save lives.
