There has been 'unprecedented demand' for recycling sacks in Milton Keynes resulting in a backlog of thousands of requests per week.

Earlier this month, Milton Keynes Council announced that festive waste was up by a third. This meant that the refuse teams had to collect over 1,400 tonnes of rubbish in the first week of 2021 alone.

Lockdown sees more people spend time at home, and subsequently create more waste, so there has been an increase in demand for recycling sacks.

A Milton Keynes Council source says that there has been an "unprecedented demand" for recycling sacks, and that there is a "backlog of requests" of around 2,500 to 3,000 per week.

The Council has contracted three permanent crews from Serco to deliver each 200 rolls per day, but this is currently not enough. The source said: "As of last week they have a ramping up support from parking colleagues. If residents have not received a confirmation email about their sack order, then the council ask they wait a little longer as there are some delays."

Currently, parish outlets are not offering click and collect services at this time which the council source says is putting "additional strain" on deliveries.

A spokesperson for Milton Keynes Council said: "We aim to get them out within 10 working days. Please bear with us, rather than chasing your delivery as right now we’re dealing with more requests than usual. Thanks for your patience."
