Support group teams up with cancer support services team

The Swallows, a nationwide Head and Neck Cancer Support Group based in Blackpool, have teamed up with the cancer services team at Milton Keynes University Hospital to launch a local branch of the group.

They will be hosting a launch event for patients and carers who have been diagnosed with Head and Neck Cancer.

The event has been designed to give patients and carers the opportunity to find out what information and support The Swallows can offer as well as providing a chance to meet like-minded people who have been in a similar unfortunate position.

This will be a very relaxed evening where attendees can socialise and converse about the challenges they have faced and more importantly, how they have overcome some of these challenges.

The free event is being held on Wednesday 14 February from 7pm – 8.30pm at the Mercure Abbey Hill Hotel, Milton Keynes, MK8 8LY.

Amanda Naylor, Macmillan Head and Neck Advanced Nurse Practitioner at Milton Keynes University Hospital said, “This event provides a fantastic opportunity to bring together individuals and families who have been through the challenging and distressing experience of a cancer diagnosis and treatment. In many circumstances, this can put families under a lot of pressure and we want to be there to provide help at a difficult time. An event such as this is a great chance to showcase what support there is available.”

Chris Curtis, The Swallows Chairman and World Patient Ambassador, wanted to arrange the event to ensure patients and carers in Milton Keynes are getting the right support that they need. “I decided to set up The Swallows Charity because of the difficulty a lot of people have with swallowing following being diagnosed with head and neck cancer. The group is intended to help provide support and information for both patients and their carers.

“It has been a pleasure to help organise this event with Milton Keynes University Hospital to bring people together to share their stories whilst also looking at the positive things in their lives. The evening really is open to anyone and it would be great to see as many people there as possible.”
