Stony Stratford to have 'minimal display' of Christmas lights and no 'switch on' event this year

Christmas Lights at Stony Stratford is the latest event to take a hit due to the coronavirus pandemic, with organisers stating that the main event has been cancelled.

Last month, it was announced that the Christmas light switch on in Newport Pagnell would not go ahead.

Volunteers revealed that additional risk assessments, new coronavirus control measures and the possibility of a last-minute cancellation in the event of a local lockdown were the reasons for cancelling.

And now, Christmas Lights at Stony Stratford seems to have followed suit.

Organisers have said that there will only be a "minimal display" of Christmas lights as the main event, the annual switch on fun day called WatlingFest, will no longer be going ahead.

Usually, residents can enjoy a street market, dancing, a funfair and a lantern parade at Market Square. Although this won't be happening, organisers have encouraged people to visit the town and enjoy the lights "in their own way" throughout December.

The Stony Stratford Lantern Project Volunteers, however, are keen to organise a lantern-making experience for the community this year. "It is likely that we will sell ‘Lantern Kits’ for everyone to make their lanterns at home," said a spokesperson. "But at this point we haven’t reached a decision about holding some kind of ‘Lantern Event’. Please join our Facebook Group - Stony Stratford Lantern Project - for the latest updates. Let’s keep those lanterns burning."
