Stony Stratford floods still leaves residents without home to return to

The floods in Stony Stratford over Christmas left many residents with no choice but to evacuate. A month on, some have still not returned to their properties.

Residents have complained that they were given no warning that the River Great Ouse, which flows through the Buckinghamshire town, would burst its banks.

The flooding was a result of Storm Bella passing through the region over Christmas Eve, forcing the Great Ouse to burst its banks in Stony Stratford, Newport Pagnell, Wolverton, Ravenstone and Cosgrove.

But a month after, there are still calls for someone to take responsibility for the lack of notice.

Gerry Maxwell told ITV Anglia News how that, despite having flood defences at his property, there was nobody from the Environment Agency to assess the damage that was left behind.

Milton Keynes Council have launched a statutory investigation, whilst in a statement the Environment Agency have said that "their officers are now working with communities to develop a recovery plan".

They've also urged those who have been affected by the flooding to encourage their insurers to invest in more flood prevention measures.
