Starship delivery robots in Milton Keynes take part in the nation's clap for carers

Starship delivery robots were spotted taking part in the nation's clap for carers on Thursday night (14/5).

The self-driving robots stopped in their tracks and began to flash their lights and play the sound of applause as the clock struck 8pm.

A video of the robots, filmed outside Budgens in Campbell Park, was posted on social media.

Milton Keynes is the first place in the UK to use these robots to deliver parcels, groceries and food. People can buy items from supermarkets via the app and get their order driven to them by the robots. This delivery method has proved popular amongst residents that are having to isolate and/or are social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic.

A spokesperson for Starship Technologies said: “We are doing everything we can to keep our customers and employees safe. All of the sanitisation processes around our service have been reviewed by experts and we’re following their guidance on operating procedures to ensure a safe and convenient service for everyone. Without robots, more humans are needed in the supply chain for delivery, and as humans are the key source of transmission – using robots decreases this risk.”

Starship Technologies has been working to expand its delivery radius in Milton Keynes. Last month, it was announced that residents in Great Linford could get their groceries from the Co-op delivered to them by the delivery robots.

And, in the past two days, thousands more people have been able to use the service as the Co-op in Bletchley and Shenley Church End have been introduced into the service area.

Starship robots already cover a number of estates including Broughton, Middleton, Monkston, Kents Hill, Walnut Tree, Furzton, Shenley Brook End, Shenley Lodge, Furzton, Emerson Valley, Tattenhoe and the City Centre.
