Rishi Sunak becomes Prime Minister after meeting King

Rishi Sunak has just made a statement in Downing Street after meeting the King to become prime minister

Speaking outside Number 10, the former chancellor said "some mistakes were made" but it was a "noble aim" to want to improve growth.

"Trust is earned and I will earn yours," the new PM said.

Mr Sunak paid tribute to his predecessor Liz Truss, saying she was enthusiastic to create change, but "some mistakes were made".

He also set out the key issues on his agenda:

    • Stronger NHS
    • Better schools
    • Safer streets
    • Control of borders
    • Protecting environment
    • Supporting armed forces
    • Levelling up
    • Building economy

It comes after Liz Truss resigned as prime minister after just six weeks on Thursday.

In a statement read outside Downing Street, announcing her resignation, Ms Truss said: "I came into office at a time of great economic and international instability."

"Families and businesses were worried about how to pay their bills."

Ms Truss added that she was elected "with a mandate to change this", saying: "We delivered on energy bills."

It was announced yesterday that Rishi Sunak would become Prime Minister as Penny Mordaunt dropped out of the Conservative leadership race at the last minute after failing to secure 100 backers.

Boris Johnson had pulled out of the Conservative leadership race on Sunday after receiving the public backing of 59 Tory MPs.
