Residents vote for full demolition and regeneration of Serpentine Court in referendum

Residents of Serpentine Court on the Lakes Estate in Milton Keynes have backed full demolition regeneration in a referendum which took place across Friday and Saturday this week.

The option was backed by 93% of voters in a referendum with a turnout of 84%.

There will now be further design events, leading to a planning submission in Spring or Summer 2019.  Work should then start on building new homes in 2020.

Leader of Milton Keynes Council, Cllr Peter Marland, said: "The huge turnout and overwhelming result has delivered a very clear choice from residents. It is a testament to all the hard work of the community. We have a lot more work to do, and a lot more engagement with all residents, until a final scheme, but it is a positive step forward."

Leader of Milton Keynes Conservatives, Cllr Alex Walker, said: "A huge congratulations to Serpentine Court residents who have been campaigning with real heart for years to secure full regeneration. The result provides a very strong mandate to take the project forward."

"All eyes are now on Milton Keynes Council to deliver for residents. As an opposition we will be relentless in making sure it happens. I have always believed regeneration is the most important thing we are going to do. We are a fast growing and successful city, but we can't leave people behind. Giving our most disadvantaged residents a better chance in life is essential."

The results were announced by Cllr Nigel Long, Milton Keynes Council Cabinet Member for Housing and Regeneration.

He said: "There was enormous joy amongst the residents who had devoted 14 months of their lives to preparing the options that went to ballot."

"This is a great day for the diverse Serpentine Court community. Now the detailed work starts on turning the dream of new homes into reality."

"I worked at Serpentine Court, when I first came to Bletchley in 1983. I supported regeneration in the early 1990s but it did not happen. I am passionately committed to seeing the ballot decision turned into reality. Together, we will deliver the high quality homes that will improve lives and opportunities for the community."
