Redway Runners ran the show with record number of runners at parkrun

Redway Runners beginners stole the show at this weekend’s Milton Keynes 5K parkrun in Willen with beginners graduating marking the end of their 10-week running course.

Team Green was out in full force at the beginners’ graduation on Saturday 30 March 2019. The award-winning community running team run regular courses for those wanting to start on their running journey and at the end of it take part in the Milton Keynes 5K parkrun at Willen.

A total of 320 started the course just over 10 weeks ago and some who have never run before. The club’s run lead and beginners’ co-ordinator, Annette Smyth said of the graduation, “The atmosphere was absolutely amazing! We had 386 from the club running which was almost half of the runners at the parkrun.”

“Well done to the runners who have turned up all week come rain or shine to run. This for me is what it is all about – a real celebration of their efforts.”

One of the runners who graduated included Debbie Wright from MK who signed up on the free Redway Runners course who is determined to run the Race for Life later this year in memory of family members who lost their lives to cancer. She is determined to run and not walk and this weekend’s parkrun has proved exactly that.

Debbie ran the whole of the course in just 43 minutes. “I felt absolutely isolated having lost not only my mother to ovarian cancer, my husband but my sister too of this awful disease. Redway Runners has helped me to learn how to run but also make some great friends too since I started this wonderful journey, said Debbie.

Martin Lawrence, the club’s Chair was delighted with the club’s successful graduation this weekend and said, “These free courses are for all abilities and ever so popular - we aim to provide a number of options to cater for all people as much as possible.”

“I am amazed by the dedication by those who take part in our beginners’ courses and when they graduate it gives not only me but our run leads such a great feeling for all their efforts and hard work.”
