RECAP: Footballer shot dead by police after neighbour's dead body and injured child are discovered in Milton Keynes home

A footballer was shot dead by police after his neighbour's dead body and an injured child were discovered at a property in Two Mile Ash last Saturday (26/6).

An inquest opening heard that Thames Valley Police received a 999 call from concerned neighbours after a woman's screams were coming from a property along Denmead at around 9:40am. The apartment was said to have been occupied by 24-year-old Olney FC footballer Kelvin Igweani.

Neighbours reported that two people fled from the property but one young boy - whose age is unknown - remained inside.

Armed officers rushed to the scene and forced entry into the property to discover that Richard James Woodcock, a 38-year-old highways officer for Milton Keynes Council, was dead due to a "traumatic head injury".

The court heard that Mr Woodcock lived at the house next door and was said to have made his way into his neighbour's apartment to "rescue" the young boy.

David Bannister from the IOPC told the court this morning (2/7) that police officers soon spotted the young boy, who had serious injuries, alongside 24-year-old Kelvin Igweani. Mr Igweani allegedly acted "aggressive" towards the officers so he was tasered, but this was ineffective.

It was said that Mr Igweani then "barricaded" himself in the main bedroom with the injured boy. Police said that the child's cries could be heard, as could sounds of an "ongoing assault".

The court heard that officers made their way into the bedroom and used the taser on Mr Igweani once more before an officer fired four gunshots.

Police say that despite immediate first aid and subsequent treatment from paramedics, Mr Igweani was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 24-year-old died from a gunshot wound to the chest.

Mr Tom Osbourne, a senior coroner from Milton Keynes, told the court that Kelvin Igweani is suspected of the murder of Mr Woodcock and the assault of the young boy.

An inquest has been opened into both of the deaths.
