Prominent local figures rally behind city status bid for Milton Keynes

A number of local figureheads have shown their support of Milton Keynes Council's bid for city status to mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022.

Mayor of Milton Keynes, Mohammed Kahn, gave his words of support towards the Council's bid as he said: "I'm delighted Milton Keynes is bidding for the city status.

"It's a city with a population of 265,000 people; a city where 75 different languages are spoken, so diverse and one of the most diverse places in the UK.

"It's a city with more than one million trees and one of the greenest cities in the UK. Milton Keynes is progressing towards a 2050 plan, with huge growth and big companies like Santander and Network Rail making their hubs here lots of others onlooking.

"As the Mayor of Milton Keynes, it's an honour to support the city status."

The Leader of Milton Keynes Council, Pete Marland, was also behind the motion as he added: "A collection of towns and villages have come together to create one of the best places in the country.

"With the Queen's Platinum Jubilee, we've been given an opportunity to show how over the past 50 years, we deserve to be a city.

"I believe by expressing our pride in place, and expressing the pride in the community, we can show why this place is somewhere the past, present and future can exist in one place.

"As Leader of Milton Keynes Council, I'm proud to be supporting our city bid, and I hope you can too."

MK Dons Chairman Pete Winkelman added his words of support as he said: "We are fully behind the Council’s cross-party bid to secure City status for Milton Keynes.

"It is fitting that this opportunity comes in celebration of Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee with Milton Keynes unique in being the only place designated, designed and fully developed during Her reign.

"One of our proudest moments was to welcome Queen Elizabeth II in 2007 to officially open Stadium MK, which has since hosted some of the biggest occasions in sports, music and entertainment.

"As a Football Club, we have always endeavoured to reflect the original ethos of Milton Keynes – to be bold, to be original and to deliver. We have always thought of ourselves as a City - now is our time to formally become one."
