Pop-up fundraiser music festival to take place in Olney this weekend

The festival, which will be taking place over three popular pubs, is taking place in aid of the Ukrainian Humanitarian Crisis.

This Saturday, 26th March, over 24 different bands and performers will be taking to the stage over three pubs, The Cherry Tree, The Two Brewers and The Swan in aid of Ukraine.

The event, named The Olkraine Pop Up Music Festival, has received huge support from the local businesses of Olney who have very generously donated prizes for the raffle and supplied much needed posters and flyers.

Taking place between 2pm and 11pm, anybody is welcome to head to the market town and enjoy music whilst raising money for Ukraine.

The festival is free with donations welcome on the door.

The main organisers of the event, Martin and Iryna, are both residents who are from Ukraine.

With lots of friends and family still in Ukraine, the organisers have said they have heard first hand the help that is needed.

From collecting and organising the delivery of life saving first aid in to Ukraine as well as other essential items such as food and clothing, the pair are working with a Military first aid trainer who is on the ground teaching front line first aid as well as helping Iryna’s brother who is working to get people across the border into Poland and finding shelter for them.

Martin told MKFM: "From a young age I had always help Ukraine close to my heart and at the age of 25 decided I must finally visit the Ukraine, to find out where part of my heritage had come from. I spoke to my grandfather who advised I cannot just go by myself, I would need help, a guide/translator, he introduced me to Iryna who greeted me at the Kyiv airport and I instantly fell in love. 6 months later we were married.

"Fast forward almost 15 years and we are living in the beautiful town of Olney in Buckinghamshire. We have our own local business, Body and Mind Botanicals and having survived Covid for 2 years we were hopeful of 2022 being a better year.

"It has been exactly 5 weeks since the invasion of Ukraine, we have been on a rollercoaster of ups and downs since then, I prefer to focus on the positives which is difficult whilst Russian artillery and missiles are dropped on innocent people including children, whilst people trying to flee the artillery and missiles are shot dead in their cars and we all are constantly threatened of a nuclear attack should we intervene.

"But over the past 5 weeks, we have also seen so much support and a show of strong community spirit from Olney it has given us the strength to work as hard as we can to help the people of Ukraine.  People from Olney and the surrounding areas donated about 5 tons of essential supplies including medical, food, clothing and toiletries, the whole family, including our kids have been sorting and boxing the supplies and delivered them to a team in Milton Keynes who arranged transport to Ukraine.

"We are also working to collect money, money that is going straight into the hands of people in Ukraine that urgently need it. So far we have raised and donated £25k and got it to people like Andri, my wife’s cousin who has volunteered to use his own van to transport essential supplies collected in Poland back into conflict zones whilst then evacuating people out of those areas, Marta who runs a women’s shelter called City of Good is housing women and children in the west of Ukraine as the displaced transition out of Ukraine. Sergie, who is buying essential supplies for the Ukrainian government including helmets, armour and night vision. And Natalya in Milton Keynes who is sourcing medical supplies to go out to the frontline to treat the wounded."

A fundraiser has been set up here.
