Police have had to seize some privately owned e-scooters in Milton Keynes

In an exclusive interview with MKFM, The Commander for the Milton Keynes local policing area discussed the forces stance on e-scooters.

The Commander for the Milton Keynes local policing area, Marc Tarbit, discussed e-scooters in an exclusive interview with Darren from the MKFM Breakfast show.

When asked if TVP were aware of an issue with people using privately owned scooters, Marc Tarbit responded: "There's obviously a distinction between the rental and the privately owned scooters, if you have a privately owned scooter, you can not drive that in a public place.

"It can only be on private land with consent of the owner."

Marc Tarbit explained how the reason for this is because you cannot get insurance for a private scooter on a road. This means in the case of an accident or emergency, the owners would not be covered.

With the legislation around e-scooters being quite new, one of the approaches that TVP are taking to tackle privately owned scooters being driven in public is in the first instance, making sure they are engaging and giving users advice.

After this they will use enforcement.

"We have seized some scooters, we haven't seized many but it's something that we can do if we need to." Marc said, "At the minute we are probably more in the engage and explain."

Anyone caught breaking the current laws in place could risk being fined £300, as well as adding six points to any current or future issued driver's licences. Police officers may also confiscate the e-scooters of any rule breakers.

To rent an e-scooter, you must be over the age of 16 and possess at least a provisional driving licence. E-scooters in Milton Keynes can be booked through the app of the relevant operators - for a small fee.
