'People's Vote' campaigners take to the streets of Milton Keynes

Campaigners for a 'People’s Vote' on the final Brexit deal were out on the streets of Milton Keynes this afternoon speaking to local residents.

The group were asking residents to take part in their survey on whether they would support a second referendum on EU membership.

Special focus was given to young people in Milton Keynes. Gerard Burke, one of the group’s leaders, said: “We were tremendously impressed with the young people we spoke to. They were energised, very well-informed about the issues surrounding Brexit, and wanted to have a democratic say in their own futures. They were particularly concerned about the loss of freedom of movement and their right to live, study, and work in 27 other countries.”

One of the youngsters, Orlando Ribeiro, aged 17 from Newport Pagnell, said: “Brexit will ruin our futures - and we weren’t even able to vote!”

His friend, Megan-Louise Hutson, also 17, of New Bradwell, added: “We want freedom of movement.  Let us have the right to decide our own future!”

Mr Burke noted that Milton Keynes Council now also backs 'all options being on the table' with regards to Brexit, including being open to a second referendum with an option to Remain.

He continued: “And yet, Mark Lancaster and Iain Stewart both insist that the referendum in 2016 should be the last time that people are ever allowed to vote on Brexit, and that it doesn’t matter if people have changed their minds or that, having seen the Government’s proposed deal rejected by so many of Mark and Iain’s own Tory colleagues in Parliament, the people of MK would rather the deal we already have and now want to stay in the EU. Indeed, in Mark and Iain’s recent media appearances, they’ve scoffed at the People’s Vote campaign and seem to think that the very thing that the majority of their own constituents want is some kind of joke."

“With such narrow majorities, and with new voters in our survey unanimously wanting to Remain, it’s very brave of both Mark and Iain to treat the views of their constituents, on the single biggest decision facing our country for generations, with such contempt.”

Earlier today, Mark Lancaster and Iain Stewart both told MKFM they would be backing Theresa May's Brexit deal.

Iain Stewart, MP for Milton Keynes South, said: “I urge everyone to read the document in full before rushing to conclusions. There has been a lot of political posturing but there's much to be welcomed in the agreement.”

“This is a time for cool heads and I'm working with my colleagues to get assurances on areas of concerns such as protecting the integrity of our union and our exit from the transition period.”

“I am, however, confident the deal does deliver on the Prime Minister's priorities and I admire the dedication and resiliance she has shown throughout the negotiations. The PM has my 100% support.”
