People advised to avoid walking in wooded areas due to high winds in Milton Keynes today

Howe Park Wood is a popular walking spot

People are being advised to avoid walking in wooded areas today (21/5) as high winds are expected to continue.

The message of warning comes as strong gusts of up to 45-50mph mean that it is likely tree branches, and even entire trees, can fall at a moment's notice.

Milton Keynes is known for its wealth of parks and greenery, so there are plenty of trees that could potentially cause a hazard to residents.

The Parks Trust, a charity that owns many of the city's parks and open spaces, has advised people to be extra cautious when heading out.

They said: "Please take extra care when visiting the parks today and avoid walking in woodlands and underneath trees. Strong winds are forecast which could cause tree branches to fall."

People have already reported seeing branches over footpaths, with one incident also taking place last night where a 20ft tree was dangling over a bungalow in Furzton.

A weather warning is in place for most of the country, lasting until 9pm tonight. Drivers are being advised to take extra care when travelling on the roads.

Drivers should keep both hands on the wheel, drive slower than usual, and leave extra space between themselves and the vehicle in front.
