People of Milton Keynes pay tribute to 'strong and caring' nurse who died after contracting COVID-19

Zauma Ekoli, an NHS nurse for over thirty years, sadly passed away with coronavirus on Easter Monday (13/4).

Tributes have since been pouring in for Zauma, also known as Josie, who lived in Milton Keynes for 12 years.

"She dedicated her whole life to helping others," said one of Zauma's five children. "Whether it was in the hospital she worked or in her private life. She was able to work 4/5 nights a week as a nurse whilst being a prominent figure for her children plus countless others."

Zauma, alongside her children Naomi, Kenan, Aaron, Aalijah and Jean Claude Jr. lived in Leadenhall up until 2015 when they moved to Leeds. Her children still have lots of friends here in Milton Keynes.

The 55-year-old was an agency nurse at Harrogate District Hospital and was admitted to Leeds General Infirmary last Tuesday (7/4). She sadly passed away on Easter Monday (13/4).

Zauma's children described her as "god fearing, beautiful, strong and caring".

They continued: "Our mother had the most beautiful smile and lit up any room she walked in. And when she decided to go out and enjoy herself, she came dressed so elegantly.

"Our mother showcased her faith, love and selflessness in every aspect of her life and this can be shown through the stories by the people she encountered throughout her life.

"We all love her so much and it can’t be put into words how much we miss her."

Jill Foster, Chief Nurse at Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Zauma Ekoli, known as Josie, was a much-valued agency nurse who has worked with the Trust for the past two years.

“She worked a range of shifts in a number of wards and departments. Josie will be sadly missed by all her friends and colleagues at Harrogate District Hospital and our thoughts are with her family at this difficult time.”
