People in Milton Keynes warned of supermarket-bought eggs potentially contaminated with salmonella

Shoppers have been urged to double-check eggs that have been bought from several supermarkets due to possible contamination with salmonella.

Lion stamped eggs from Costco, Aldi, Asda, Morrison's and Sainsbury's may have been affected.

Last month, the Food Standards Agency issued a precautionary warning which has now been extended meaning that a number of eggs still in circulation should be checked by shoppers.

The first warning applies to eggs that have the batch code 1UK15270 stamped on the egg shell, but now two more batches have been added to the list.

Now the extra batches that may have been contaminated with salmonella are also 0UK15270 and 3UK15270.

The lion stamp on eggs means that they are safe to eat raw or runny because the hens have been vaccinated against salmonella.

The affected eggs are still safe to eat, however, so long as they are thoroughly cooked. The yolks and whites should not be eaten runny.

Consumers should always follow good hygiene and egg handling practices when handling eggs and associated packaging, including:

    • storing eggs in the fridge until use
    • using eggs by the best before date
    • cleaning surfaces and kitchen equipment effectively after use, including the fridge
    • washing hands thoroughly after handling of eggs, including packaging and eggshells
