An inspirational local lady who has a rare progressive neurological disease, has vowed to take on the All New Moo 2020 in a bid to raise funds for Willen Hospice.
While Hen, 26, was recently at the Hospice for the second time, preparing for return home after hospital admission, she noticed a poster for the Moo event. Her mum, Jan said “Hen had been talking about doing something for the Hospice. When she saw the poster at reception, she realised that it is something she would like to tackle as she can do it in her own time and take as long as she likes. Because Hen uses a power chair with head control, she’ll be ‘driving’ it with her head. It will be quite a challenge for her.”
When Hen found out that Hospice Social Care Assistant Jurate Aukstiejute was also planning to walk the Moo, they teamed up to take part together on Saturday 12 September.
Speaking through her Eyegaze, a device that enables Hen to use eye motion to type out short sentences, she said “I’m looking forward to doing the Moo and raising funds for Willen Hospice. Fingers crossed for good weather!”
Tracey Jago, Willen Hospice Events Manager said: “I’m delighted at how enthusiastic Hen is about helping us. She is truly inspiring to be taking on the Moo despite the physical challenges she faces, and we can’t wait to cheer her on!”
The All New Moo takes place on Saturday 12 September 2020 between 8am and 6pm. Families, friends and colleagues can sign up to run, walk or scoot 5, 10 miles or longer. Participants are encouraged to record their challenge on Strava and send the results in to receive their medal. A team will be waving them off and welcoming them back via Zoom as they start and finish, and if they pass the Hospice on their route, staff will be out to cheer them on at the lakeside.
During the pandemic, the Hospice has remained open to patients, and has provided care to people in their own homes. The charity needs to raise £4.7million every year, that’s £9 a minute, to continue providing its specialist, compassionate care to patients with life-limiting illnesses, and at the end of their lives. With their usual fundraising events and activity cancelled by Covid-19, fundraisers like the Moo will help to make a huge difference.
Entry to the All New Moo is £20 for adults (includes vest) and £8 for children under 14 (includes colour-in bib and goodies).
