Parents of sexual abuse victim speak out about the importance of reporting offences

A father and mother, whose daughter was sexually assaulted, have shared their family’s experience in the hope that it will help others who may sadly have to report such a crime to the police.

David and Katie, whose names have been changed to protect their daughter’s identity, wanted to share their family’s experiences of the investigation.

They have been featured in a YouTube video, which was published by Thames Valley Police.

It also shares details about Simon Honour, age 55 from the Thames Valley, who was convicted for sexually assaulting their child.

On February 15 2021, Mr Honour pleaded guilty to 11 counts of assaulting a girl under 13 by touching. He has been sentenced to seven years' imprisonment.

Often the investigation of such crimes can be extremely challenging for victims and their families; Thames Valley Police says it can be difficult for victims to come forward and report it.

Detective Constable Rosie Everitt is a Child Abuse Investigator.

In the video below DC Everitt explains some of the processes that can happen when a case is investigated.

A spokesperson for the local police force said: "Thames Valley Police is committed to investigating child sexual abuse and they encourage children, their parents or carers to please report so that we can help support victims, safeguard them and carry out an investigation.

"Time should be no barrier to reporting and we will always look to investigate."

If you are a victim of child abuse, or worried for the safety or wellbeing of a child, we would encourage you to please report it. If you or the person you are reporting about is in immediate danger please call 999 now. If it isn’t an emergency you can report to 101 or you can report online through Thames Valley Police's website.

The website has further information on how to report child abuse. There is further information on the website on how to access support from other organisations.
