Over 50s in Milton Keynes could be offered COVID-19 vaccine within coming days thanks to supply surge

It has been reported that the next priority group, over 50s, could be offered a vaccine within days due to a surge in supply.

The BBC has said that, according to NHS sources, the number of jabs administered is likely to top 4 million this week - nearly double what is usually achieved in a single week.

This rapid acceleration, partnered with more jabs being made available from a large shipment of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, means that the NHS could move onto its next priority group, the over 50s, sooner than expected.

Therefore over 50s are likely to be called forward to book their appointments within the coming days.

The BBC adds that all over 50s should be given at least one dose by the end of the month, two weeks ahead of the NHS' schedule.

So far, around one in three people in Milton Keynes have had the vaccine. This equates to around 83,000 doses, with 86.5% of residents aged 60-years-old and over having had at least one dose.

Currently individuals aged 55 or over are now able to book their vaccine appointment.

In addition, people of any age who are at high risk of coronavirus (group 4 - clinically extremely vulnerable) or have a condition that puts them at higher risk (group 6 - clinically vulnerable) can book their appointment online now.

The NHS is contacting all eligible residents by letter, but there is no need to wait for a letter to arrive before you can book an appointment online.

If you are eligible, you can book your appointment now by clicking here.

MKFM will update the local news pages when the booking site opens for the next priority group.
