Not one, not two but three opportunities to fall in love with opera

From 1st to 4th April Welsh National Opera will bring their Spring 2020 season to Milton Keynes Theatre, featuring two opera classics and an operatic rarity.

Welsh National Opera don’t do things by halves. This spring, Milton Keynes Theatre are delighted to welcome the company back with three great productions that deliver exactly what you’d hope for in a trio of amazing operas; revenge, temptation, suspense and of course, a treasure house of sublime music.

Stop anyone in the street and ask them to name one opera and, odds are, they’ll say Carmen.

No surprise really then that it has become one of the most popular and frequently performed operas. And while composer Georges Bizet is only really known for this one work, boy, is it a good one.

Carmen has just got everything you want from an opera; passion; drama; the hottest of seductresses and it’s full of brilliantly hummable tunes including the famous Toreador Song and Carmen’s provocative Habanera. Award-winning director Jo Davies provides a refreshing perspective on this well-known opera, setting it in Central America in the 1970s, while remaining true to the traditional story in every sense.

Director David Pountney and the creative team behind La forza del destino and Un ballo in maschera (which WNO performed at MK Theatre last March) reunite to complete the company’s Verdi Trilogy with a striking new production of Les vêpres siciliennes.

Based around true events which occurred in Sicily in 1282, Verdi’s grand opera features wonderful choruses and breath-taking arias but beware the sound of wedding bells; they signal the start of a terrible tragedy…

And just to lighten the mood, WNO complete their visit to MKT with one of the greatest comic operas, The Marriage of Figaro. This period-set production has all the ingredients of a classic opera plus a series of crazy twists and turns. And as Mozart’s sublime score brilliantly brings the action to life, it will keep you guessing (and humming along) until the final scene!
