National housing charity L&Q supports young people in Milton Keynes

One of the UK’s leading housing associations, L&Q, is helping to deliver ‘A Step Into Work Day’ with other local businesses in Milton Keynes as part of its commitment to supporting young people in the community.

On 10th July, L&Q will work together with local charity, Worktree, to help facilitate sessions for young people in Milton Keynes who want to learn about the world of work. The sessions, which will take place at St Paul’s Catholic School in Leadenhall, will include employability skills such as problem solving, enterprise awareness, teamwork and self-management.

A charitable arm of L&Q, the £250 million L&Q Foundation was set up in 2011 to bring together its social and economic programmes. Working alongside the Foundation, the new L&Q Academy is giving people the skills to make their aspirations a reality, while creating a workforce that can get Britain building.

Last month, L&Q partnered with Milton Keynes College and Stewart Milne Construction to host a meet and greet event and sponsored the Milton Keynes College Student of the Year Awards 2019.

The meet and greet event, which took place at the Milton Keynes College Innovation and Technology Centre, brought together 17-24-year-old students studying Level 2 and 3 building trade courses, including carpentry and painting and decorating. The event gave students the opportunity to speak to L&Q and Stewart Milne Construction as prospective employers and find out what skills they need to secure a job in the industry.

Local suppliers and subcontractors were also invited to learn about what L&Q and Stewart Milne Construction are building in the area and to register their interest as potential contractors for developments.

In addition, L&Q was headline sponsor for the Milton Keynes College Student of the Year Awards 2019, which took place at the Woburn Sculpture Gallery. L&Q presented two of the prestigious awards, the first going to Ayoub Abdalla as the winner of the English Speakers of Other Language and Alternative Provisions (ESOL) category and the second for Mykenlande Dorasin, the winner of overall Student of the Year 2019.

Sharon Boot, Counties Community Development Lead at L&Q, said: “As a charitable housing association expanding our geographical remit into Milton Keynes and Bedfordshire, building meaningful relationships with local communities is very important to us. At L&Q, we are passionate about supporting young people and partnering with local education providers such as Milton Keynes College and St Paul’s School is enabling us to deliver a positive impact for the communities we serve.”

Worktree’s Tom Bulman, said: “We’re very pleased to have the L&Q team helping us deliver this event.  Students need to meet people with different jobs, find out about the different ways they got to those jobs, and see directly what skills are needed to succeed in work.”

Dr Julie Mills, CEO & Group Principal at Milton Keynes College said: “We are delighted to partner with L&Q, who are supporting the work of the college and our students across a number of initiatives. It’s a great way for our students to learn from prospective employers in the area, as well as providing us with the opportunity to showcase our talented and work-ready individuals that businesses like L&Q are seeking to future-proof their workforce.”

L&Q has ambitious plans to bring high-quality, affordable homes and significant community investment and support to Milton Keynes and Bedfordshire. The housing association is already active in Milton Keynes and Bedfordshire with 225 homes at Saxon Reach in Milton Keynes due to launch later this year.
