Over half of electric scooter riders in Milton Keynes are using them more frequently for essential trips, according to new data.

Spin, which has a fleet of 300 e-scooters in Milton Keynes, has also found that just under three quarters (72%) of local riders believe that e-scooters are a safer alternative to public transport during COVID-19.

Spin's e-scooters have been available in the city for five months and there has been over 46,000 rides so far. Many of these journeys would previously have been made on other forms of transport, with 62% of riders saying they have used an e-scooter instead of driving alone in a car journey at least once. 27% made the replacement for their last trip.

Steve Pyer, UK Country Manager at Spin, said: “Although we follow the “stay at home” message we are delighted that the people of Milton Keynes are choosing e-scooters as a safe, sustainable and COVID-19 secure method of travel when restrictions permit. For now, we’d like to highlight our Everyday Heroes programme through which we give eligible NHS staff free rides as a way of saying thank you for their outstanding work. We were also encouraged to see that Milton Keynes riders are choosing e-scooters over solo drive car journeys, which is a great indicator of the potential for Spin to support modal shift across the UK as we seek to expand our offer.”

Spin currently offers subsidised rides to low-income riders, and free 30-minute rides to NHS workers (including doctors, nurses, cleaners, etc).
