Thousands of coronavirus tests are being carried out in Milton Keynes each week

On Friday, it was announced that 20% of the local population (just over 55,000 people) have been tested for coronavirus since our local test centre opened.

This is a stark contrast compared to a few months ago when Milton Keynes residents could not book a test, despite the Central Milton Keynes test centre appearing empty.

But at the end of October, testing capacity across the country increased by 20% as the Government aimed to hit its target of conducting 500,000 tests in one week.

And looking at the more recent picture, testing has increased even more - with nearly 380,000 tests being carried out in the country each day.

This means that over 2.2 million people were tested in the week ending 12th November.

Milton Keynes Council announced on Friday 13th November that 55,447 individuals in total have been tested (20.6% of Milton Keynes' population), and 2,689 tests were carried out that week.

This weekly number of tests increased by 145 compared to the week before, which in turn means it is inevitable that more positive cases are being recorded.

Last week, 12.9% of people received a positive test result which is higher than the city's average (4.7% since the pandemic began).

348 positive COVID-19 cases were recorded during the week leading to Friday 13th November. And 172 cases were recorded over the weekend (Saturday 14 and Sunday 15).

Monday's test data will be released later today.
