MKFM EXCLUSIVE: Both Milton Keynes MP's WILL back Theresa May's Brexit deal

The MP's for Milton Keynes, Mark Lancaster and Iain Stewart, have revealed they will both back Theresa May's Brexit deal when it comes before Parliament.

May's Brexit deal is set to be debated and voted on in the House of Commons in early December, but many Tory MPs are threatening a no confidence vote in the Prime Minister as they claim the deal does not deliver on the result of the referendum.

Mr Stewart was due to appear on MKFM yesterday afternoon but his interview was cancelled due to "events at Westminster".

But it has now been confirmed that both MP's will back the Brexit deal.

In a statement, Mark Lancaster MP said: "My position on the withdrawal agreement has always been and will continue to be focused on protecting our economy and jobs in Milton Keynes."

"The withdrawal agreement provides a rationale foundation to debate our future arrangement with the EU over the next two years. The PM has made clear this is not the final deal and there are areas I am seeking assurances on such as our exit from the transition period. What we have in front of us gives us back control of our borders, laws and money, and sees us leave the common agricultural and fisheries policy."

"It protects the integrity of our union and will ensure businesses can continue to trade with our European partners while allowing us to forge a new place in world. It has been a tough negotiation period and I admire the PM for the grit she has shown throughout. She has my full support in her continued efforts."

Iain Stewart, MP for Milton Keynes South, said: “I urge everyone to read the document in full before rushing to conclusions. There has been a lot of political posturing but there's much to be welcomed in the agreement.”

“This is a time for cool heads and I'm working with my colleagues to get assurances on areas of concerns such as protecting the integrity of our union and our exit from the transition period.”

“I am, however, confident the deal does deliver on the Prime Minister's priorities and I admire the dedication and resiliance she has shown throughout the negotiations. The PM has my 100% support.”

“There is still lots of work to do before a meaningful vote, I want to assure my constituents I'll continue to listen to your concerns and use my best judgement as your MP."

Earlier this week, Milton Keynes Council Leader Cllr Peter Marland said he was stepping up the Council's planning for a no-deal Brexit.

He told MKFM: "How, when, or if, we leave the European Union is the major question  over which we are currently witnessing a slow motion collapse in Westminster of a Government and the authority of a Prime Minister. It is increasingly clear that her proposals will face a difficult, and perhaps fatal, journey through Parliament. We are already putting in place contingency plans, but we will be stepping up those for the worst case scenario.”

“I hope and wish that our planning will never be required, however we must be prepared. I believe there is still time for the Prime Minister to change course, but in the event she does not and there is a bad outcome, we want to be as ready as we can be.”
