Households in Milton Keynes can now have their say on the council's wheelie bin trial

Thousands of households are taking part in Milton Keynes Council's wheelie bin pilot, and can now have their say in an online consultation that goes live today (2/11).

This scheme has been launched by Milton Keynes Council who are hoping to see cleaner streets, increased recycling and reduced contamination rates.

It means that thousands of residents are currently trialling using four wheeled bins for their waste, instead of plastic bags. Each bin is colour coded as to what should go in it:

    • Green: Food and garden waste
    • Grey: Residual waste
    • Blue: Plastic, metals and glass
    • Red: Paper and card

Those who are taking part in the scheme are now invited to tell the council their experiences of the pilot, which the council wishes to implement city-wide from April 2023.

Milton Keynes Council says on their website: "Our ambition to become a greener city and improve waste collection services means there is a need to review how waste is collected. Currently about 20% of the recycling we receive contains the wrong items. We will focus on improving the waste collection system, keeping our streets cleaner by reducing the amount of rubbish spillage from sacks, increasing recycling rates with residents by making it easier to separate out recycling materials and reducing the number of injuries residents and staff experience by moving waste in sacks."

It has been a controversial topic, with some residents stating that four bins are not practical, but overall it has received a large amount of support.

Earlier this year, 72% of residents backed the council's wheelie bin plans in an MKFM poll.
