Milton Keynes University Hospital has now vaccinated over 12,000 people

The local hospital has achieved such an incredible milestone since it began its vaccination programme merely a few weeks ago.

The last year has been tough for many of us, but perhaps none more so than the incredibly talent and devoted NHS staff.

The CEO of Milton Keynes University Hospital, Joe Harrison, explained the journey and hardships the hospital and staff have endured over the last year as he posted on Twitter: “About 348 days ago we opened a repatriation centre in Milton Keynes for British nationals returning from Wuhan. We donned PPE to protect us against COVID-19 for the first time.

“In between our hospital has seen waves of patients needing our help to fight this virus. We have mourned as hundreds die despite our best efforts. We have celebrated the recoveries, the ward weddings, the discharges home. And we carry on.”

Mr Harrison then offered his thanks to the dedicated local men and women working on the frontline of the NHS, as he said: “I cannot quite believe all we have gone through in just less than a year. All our staff continue to face. All that will be needed from us before this ends. Alternately juggling despair and hope and exhaustion and elation. We owe you so much. THANK YOU.”

Councillor Alex Walker also gave his thanks on Twitter as he added: “Milton Keynes will be forever grateful for the immense efforts by all at our hospital.”
