Milton Keynes to receive £685k for walking and cycling in boost to green active transport

Milton Keynes will receive a £684,750 boost to greener, active transport as part of the Government’s Active Travel Fund.

The new funding can be used for projects such as cycleways, walk routes, traffic calming, and road safety could be improved by a ‘school streets’ scheme to close roads near schools during drop off and pick up.

The local council must consult local residents and businesses on any plans for the funding and should prove to the Government that they are meeting the needs of local people.

A survey had revealed 8 out of 10 people support measures to reduce road traffic and two-thirds support reallocating road space for active travel.

Ben Everitt, the MP for Milton Keynes North, said: “During the pandemic we’ve already seen more people out walking, on their bikes and even on e-scooters here in MK so it’s vital we continue to encourage this healthy, green form of transport.

“This funding is extremely welcome as while cars remain important to many we must invest in greener travel habits, cleaner air and healthier communities.”

Iain Stewart, the MP for Milton Keynes South, commented: “The Active Travel Fund will be beneficial for Milton Keynes and I welcome the Government funding.

"In MK, we have brilliant infrastructure, like the Redways, allowing residents to travel easily around the city by different modes of transport, which will only benefit from this additional money.

"I'm pleased that the Government have recognised local residents and businesses must be consulted by local authorities before any projects are carried out."
