Milton Keynes McDonald's Volunteers Complete 24 hour Litter Pick Event

Local McDonald’s franchisee Ken Tomkins and crew from his six restaurants across Milton Keynes, along with volunteers from the local community, embarked on a 24 hour clean up event to help improve the local area.

This marks the seventh 24-hour litter picking challenge which has been organised by McDonald’s to take place in Milton Keynes. Approximately 100 volunteers attended in total, with a dedicated and brave 14, including Mrs. D from the MK Breakfast Show on MKFM, completing the full 24 hours – a new record! The crew collected a whopping 117 bags of rubbish and recycling, making a significant sustainable impact to the local area.

Starting from Xscape at 10am on Wednesday 24th July, the litter picking volunteers ventured on a 30-mile route around Milton Keynes which included all eight McDonald’s stores. Considering the hot temperatures and extended route for 2019, including the new Wolverton store, the litter pick is a serious feat in McDonald’s contribution to the environment.

A star of the day was 84-year-old runner Brian who attended the full 24 hours, along with others from local running group Redway Runners who participated at various points of the day.  On arrival at the finish, Brian received a standing ovation from other volunteers for his incredible commitment to the local community. McDonald’s Assistant Manager Rob Burke also celebrated his 15-year anniversary while out litter picking with the group and received a gift card at the end of the litter pick as a thank you for his contribution to the business.

Local McDonald’s franchisee Ken Tomkins, said: “This is the seventh time we have hosted a 24 hour clean up event and the amount of support we continue to receive from our McDonald’s staff, local businesses, and the wider community is overwhelming. We look forward to next year’s event and appreciate everyone who is willing to help look after our local area!”

McDonald’s will be carrying out community litter picks throughout the summer months as part of its new Keep Up the Clean Up initiative. On top of this, every McDonald’s restaurant carries out daily litter patrols all year round to collect all litter that has been discarded, regardless of its origin. Crew members across the UK cover a total of 3,000 miles each week on litter patrols, which equates to 150,000 miles a year and the distance of five marathons each year per restaurant.
