Milton Keynes Council leader says Keir Starmer's first task is to 'ensure we beat Covid 19 as a nation'

Leader of Milton Keynes Council Cllr Peter Marland has given MKFM his reaction to the election of Sir Keir Starmer as the new Leader of the Labour Party.

The shadow Brexit secretary, who has been an MP since 2015, beat front bench colleague Rebecca Long-Bailey and Wigan MP Lisa Nandy to the role of leader.

Mr Starmer triumphed in the first round of polling, winning 56.2% of the vote. Ms Long-Bailey was second with 27.6%, while Lisa Nandy was third on 16.2%.

Commenting on his victory, Cllr Peter Marland said: "Keir Starmer has won a clear victory on the first round of voting. What is clear is that our first task is to support and help the government to ensure we beat Covid 19 as nation, but hold them to account and provide constructive opposition as we do."

"We then need to ensure we build towards a Labour Party with broad appeal that wins people’s trust so that they can support a Labour Party to form a modern, progressive and socialist government at the next General Election, and build on our position as largest party on Milton Keynes Council."
