Milton Keynes chief executive takes on 20 for 20 challenge to find a cure for brain tumours

Sue Farrington Smith MBE from Brain Tumour Research, based in Shenley Wood, is undertaking 20 challenges over a 20-day period to help find a cure for brain tumours.

Having joined forces with 19 charities for lesser known cancers to create a new, unique and exciting 20-day fundraising challenge in response to the disruption faced because of Covid-19, Sue Farrington Smith MBE, who founded and heads up the charity Brain Tumour Research based in Shenley Woods, Milton Keynes, decided to sign up herself.

To kick off her 20 for 20, Sue danced for 20 minutes with her Labrador dogs. Her other challenges to date have included potting 20 snooker balls, walking up and down the stairs 20 times and getting 20 Trivial Pursuit questions right.

Padbury resident Sue, who lost her niece Alison Phelan to an incurable brain tumour three weeks before her eighth birthday, said: “20 for 20 is all about challenging yourself, friends, family and colleagues in fun ways to raise money. The coronavirus pandemic and the cancellation of big challenge events like the London Marathon has had a huge impact on charities. We can’t let coronavirus devastate the future of research and our vital work to find a cure for the biggest cancer killer of children and the under 40s.

“Please donate to my fundraising page or even register to take on your own 20 for 20 challenge. Choose from a list of activities, or create your own, take part between 20th September and 30th November and complete your challenges over 20 consecutive days or spread it over a few weeks – it’s up to you!”

Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer, yet historically just 1% of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this devastating disease.

Brain Tumour Research funds sustainable research at dedicated centres in the UK. It also campaigns for the Government and the larger cancer charities to invest more in research into brain tumours in order to speed up new treatments for patients and, ultimately, to find a cure. The charity is calling for a national annual spend of £35 million in order to improve survival rates and patient outcomes in line with other cancers such as breast cancer and leukaemia and is also campaigning for greater repurposing of drugs.
