Milton Keynes-based volleyball team makes national finals

MK City Women’s National League Volleyball team has qualified for the National Shield Final hosted in the National Volleyball Centre in Kettering.

The final will take place on 23rd of April.

The team's position in the final came after a thrilling 5 set match in the quarter final against London Division 1 side, London Bears, who are currently up for promotion.

“That game was surreal because we were down 2 sets within 45 minutes of gameplay, but we managed to turn it around by applying some tactical changes to the team, giving us the sprint to come back and win the game in a tie break at 15-11” says coach Emanuele Tumminello.

The semifinal against Urbond Volleyball ended in 3-1 to MK City, but the score should not dissuade, as the ladies had to fight tooth and nail to end the 4th set 28-26.

“The opposition put us under pressure from the first second, due to their well placed and strong serves” commented the coach.

The qualification is unprecedented for the club, which was established from the mid 1980s for adults to play amateur level of volleyball.

The club grew to accepting juniors in 2016, starting with 8 and ending up with 100+ juniors today.

Two of the juniors are currently on the Volleyball England national Cadet squads, and many others are competing in the National Grand Prix’s.

Despite these successes, the club has struggled to secure a training and match venues to match their ambitions and demand. The teams currently train in Woughton Leisure Centre, but have to play their games in venues in Northampton and Luton, as Woughton does not qualify to the Volleyball England National League Standards or have the capacity to hold more sessions.

You can follow the club and contact them on Facebook and Instagram.
