Milton Keynes-based prison worker gets royal recognition

A prison worker at HMP Woodhill has been recognised for his work by a national prison charity and is set to meet HRH Princess Anne.

Commendee Michael Brigginshaw, a prison officer in the frontline for over twenty-five years, was described by the governor of HMP Woodhill as being an example of "what excellence looks like".

Michael, alongside Laura Jacobs, a forensic psychologist at HMP Grendon, was set to attend an awards ceremony hosted by the Butler Trust charity. Princess Anne was due to present the awards at St James' Palace, but, with the country being in lockdown, it meant the winners were recognised in an online ceremony instead.

Simon Shepherd, Director of the Butler Trust, says that Her Royal Highness Princess Anne will present the awards in person at a later date. "The awards are designed to recognise the good and dedicated work of those working in prisons, probation and youth justice," Simon added.

"Given the current national crisis we feel it's more important than ever that key workers in these vital services know they are valued and not forgotten."

The Butler Trust is a registered charity set up in 1985 and named after reforming former Home Secretary Rab Butler to recognise and celebrate outstanding work and best practice in UK prisons, the probation service, and youth justice. Princess Anne has presented the awards since the Trust was launched.
