This week, the Mayor of Milton Keynes joined local charity, Sieve MK Gateway, for a fun-filled summer activity day.
On Monday 26 August, the Mayor of MK, Councillor Marie Bradburn joined her chosen charity for the year - Sieve MK Gateway for a jam-packed activity day at Willen Lake.
Just over half a dozen Sieve MK Gateway students aged 10-14 took part in team-building activities which included katakanuing, cycle go-karts, and more.
The action-packed sporting day was organised by the charity to help to improve pupils’ communication and teamwork skills, whilst boosting self-esteem and confidence.
Sieve MK Gateway was founded in 2007 to address the problem of educational underachievement among young people, particularly BAME students.
The charity that is run by a small team, as well as up to 10 volunteers helps to inspire young people and to realise their full potential.
SMK Gateway, CEO, Tony Oyakhire, said, “It was fantastic the Mayor was able to join us for one of our summer activity days. At SMK Gateway we are all about creating opportunities for local children and young people so that they can reach their full potential and our activity days do just that. Getting out in the outdoors and socialising is equally as important to the support we offer in the classroom.”
Mayor Marie Bradburn, added, “We had an excellent day at Willen Lake, and it was great to see pupils getting involved with the activities on offer. SMK Gateway offer excellent services to children and young people and their families across the city. They do incredible work by transforming lives through education, and I hope that soon they will be able to open their new premises to keep up with growing demand across the city.”
The project to build a new learning and enterprise centre began in 2017 and the charity is hoping to relocate to the North of the city where the new building will provide space for tuition and exams, training suites, meeting rooms, studio space, and a community café.
Just last week, CEO Tony completed a 30-mile bike ride to raise fundraise for the new purpose-built community centre, since the charity has raised nearly £600.
