Mayor gets shipshape for European City of Sport

Mayor of Milton Keynes Sam Crooks took to water with MK Sailing Club as part of his European City of Sport pledge.

Based at Caldecotte Lake, MK Sailing Club offer accessible and inclusive physical activity for all ages and abilities.

Watersports in MK are being celebrated as the sport of the month for March as part of Milton Keynes’ year as a European City of Sport.

A different activity in MK will be chosen for each month throughout 2020, to highlight local successes and encourage more participants.

“Sailing is the ultimate eco-friendly and inclusive outdoor sport,” said Brian Naylor, Vice-Commodore at MK Sailing Club.

“It can be relaxing or exhilarating depending on your preference and it’s a great way to destress too.”

Milton Keynes Sailing Club is a non-profit organisation run by volunteers, who provide RYA qualified training for all abilities – with membership costs starting just over £1 per week which grants access to the club’s boats and facilities.

The Club also hosts sailability sessions for those with disabilities or learning difficulties, which are run by qualified instructors in custom-built boats.

“Sailing is often thought to be an expensive sport, but it’s really not – membership at MK Sailing Club costs less per week than a cup of coffee,” said Brian Naylor.

“We can teach you how to sail if you don’t have any sailing experience, and our qualified instructors run highly subsidised training courses too.”

MK Sailing Club has organised an open day on 6 June at Caldecotte Lake – visit their website to find out more: https://mksc.org.uk/

Celebrations continue in Milton Keynes as the city’s year of sport rolls on.  Hundreds of people and organisations have already made an #MK20in20 pledge to be more active in 2020 – find out more here: https://www.milton-keynes.gov.uk/leisure-and-community-activity-hub
