Mayor celebrates Lohri in Milton Keynes with Rangeelay Punjabi

    Rangeelay Punjabi celebrated the festival of Lohri on Saturday 15th Jan, a traditional winter folk festival and a popular harvest festival for farmers that is primarily celebrated in the northern India.

    Lohri is a popular winter Punjabi folk festival celebrated primarily in Northern India. It is celebrated by lighting bonfires, eating festive food, dancing and distributing gifts.

     People wear their brightest clothes for the festival and dance the Punjabi folk dances of bhangra and gidda to the beat of the dhol, a double-sided Indian drum popular in Punjab.

    On 15th January, the Mayor of Milton Keynes, cllr Mohammed Khan, celebrated Lohri with Rangeelay Punjabi MK where people performed to Punjabi folk music and served Sarson da saag and makki di roti – cooked mustard green leaves and roti made from cornmeal – was served as the main course at the Lohri event.

    Rangeelay Punjabi was formed on Gurunanak Dev Ji main teachings “Kirat Karo, Naam Japo, Vand Chhako (Earn your living, Remember God, Share with Others)”.

    It means that 'while earning our own living, we shall remember God at all times and share and serve others'.

    Rangeelay Punjabi is a registered community organisation for the benefit of the local community.

    They are a local community led organisation, ran by volunteers, set up to help support vulnerable people in need by supplying food and other essential items.

    In the last year, they have donated over 3000 meals.

    They aim to engage the local communities in festivals, celebrations and group events from time to time to raise funds for food donations.
