Following a Thames Valley Police investigation, a man has been jailed for assaulting a police officer.
Rodney Sergeant, aged 47, pleaded guilty at Aylesbury Crown Court to one count of Section 20 grievous bodily harm and possession of a pointed or bladed article on Friday (22/2).
Sergeant violently resisted arrest by punching an officer repeatedly while he was wanted on recall to prison at around 3.25pm on 21 November 2018 in Booker Avenue, Bradwell Common.
He managed to evade an initial arrest but ran out into a road where he was in a collision with a responding police vehicle and was then arrested.
After being detained he was searched and a blade was found in his possession.
He was charged with Section 20 grievous bodily harm and possession of a pointed or bladed article on 22 November 2018.
He was sentenced to 18 months’ imprisonment.
The officer suffered a ruptured ligament in his hand and had to have time off front line policing to recover.
Investigating officer Inspector Tim Robinson, of Milton Keynes police station, said: “When an attempt was made to arrest Sergeant, he could have simply complied, but instead he violently attacked a police officer in an unsuccessful attempt to avoid arrest.
“The injuries a Thames Valley Police officer sustained meant that he was unable to work on the front line for nine weeks while he recovered.
“I hope the sentencing shows that violence against emergency workers will be dealt with robustly, it should never been seen as being just part of the job. It will be investigated and will go through the courts.”
