Luton becomes first nearby town to move into Tier 2 of coronavirus restrictions

It has been announced that Luton will be moving into Tier 2 coronavirus restrictions from 12.01am on Saturday.

Milton Keynes, alongside neighbouring towns Bedford and Northampton, currently remain in the first tier - medium risk - meaning that restrictions stay the same.

But Luton has now moved to high risk which means that households in the area will be banned from mixing with other households indoors.

The rule of six will still apply in outdoor spaces, as will social distancing, and pubs and restaurants can remain open so long as they follow the 10pm curfew.

This comes as coronavirus cases, both nationally and locally, continue to rise.

Yesterday, 71 people tested positive for coronavirus in Milton Keynes which was the highest number of recorded cases to date. And although today's data shows that cases continue to rise, the number has drastically dropped to 29 new positive test results.

The BBC reports that Milton Keynes has seen 105 positive cases per 100,000 people in the latest week (19 Oct-25 Oct) which is considerably lower than Luton - which stands at 165 cases per 100,000 people.

But scientists have warned that the pandemic has reached a "critical stage" with almost 100,000 people a day in England being infected.

Researchers from Imperial College London say existing measures to control the virus aren't working.

And they argue more stringent action is needed nationwide "sooner rather than later".
