Local woman to take on wheelchair marathon around Milton Keynes shopping centre

Sharon Mynard has set herself the challenge of completing a wheelchair marathon around the centre:mk in memory of her friend Rory.

Sharon, who has been confined to a wheelchair since the age of 16, will be raising money for Brain Tumour Research.

"Having completed a 10K push for charity in 2019 everyone told me I would get the bug...and they were right," she said. "So, this year I've raised the bar slightly and will be attempting a full on Marathon...yes a ridiculous 26.2mile push!"

On her JustGiving page, Sharon wrote how she has been "lucky" in her life despite her spinal cord injury and has managed to achieve "what most people aspire to" including her own business, marriage and having a child, Toby.

Through her business, Sharon met her friend Rory Gilsenan who she called a "man of many talents on all sorts of horses, with which many shows were visited and laughs had".

Rory was diagnosed with Brain Cancer in November 2018 and "battled it with the most amazing Irish determination that anyone possible could".

He sadly passed away in April, and now Sharon is fundraising in Rory's memory. She has raised over £5,000 for Brain Tumour Research so far, and the total is continuing to go up.

Sharon concluded: "Having followed Rory's treatment and illness closely, I felt I could do more. On looking into Brain cancer more I couldn't believe how many people are affected, and how little funding there is into the research for this type of cancer.

"Hence my taking this on, if I can just do a little bit to help aid research and spare another family the agony of losing a loved one, then the pain, sore hands etc I am about to put myself through will be totally worth it."

According to Cancer Research, 33 new brain tumours are diagnosed every day in the UK totalling to around 12,100 every year. The Brain Tumour Charity also states that brain tumours reduce life expectancy by on average 20 years – the highest of any cancer.
