Local Labour figures bid to be next MP for Milton Keynes

A number of local Labour politicians have announced they are bidding to become the next MP for Milton Keynes.

Labour, who are the key challenger to the Conservatives in both Milton Keynes seats, are set to select their candidates for the city shortly ahead of the next general election.

For the Milton Keynes South seat, currently held by Iain Stewart MP, local councillor for Bletchley East Emily Darlington has announced she intends to fight for selection.

She has the backing of local Labour figures including Council Leader Peter Marland, Shadow Foreign Secretary David Lammy plus others including former Mayor Cllr Mohammed Khan and the GMB Union.

Darlington previously stood as the Labour candidate in Milton Keynes North in the 2015 general election, finishing second behind Conservative candidate Mark Lancaster.

Dr. Shery Delfani has also announced she will be fighting for the Labour nomination. She is a local Labour campaigner and is also a charity trustee, academic, environmentalist and author.

Meanwhile, for Milton Keynes North, former city mayor Cllr Mohammed Khan has thrown his hat into the ring to face current Tory MP Ben Everitt. Khan was the Mayor of Milton Keynes from May 2021 until May 2022, and is a local councillor for Bletchley East.

He is also a local businessman and owner of the popular Raj Douth Indian Restaurant in Bletchley.

Cllr Lauren Townsend is also seeking to be selected for the Milton Keynes North seat, and is the current Cabinet Member for Public Realm on Milton Keynes Council.

As well as being a local councillor, she is involved with the Communication Workers Union as well as the Labour for a Green New Deal campaign.
