Local hero walking 100 lengths for the NHS before his 100th birthday aims to do even more

Tom Moore, 99, is currently walking 100 lengths of his garden before his 100th birthday to raise money for the NHS, but has since said he hopes to do even more.

Speaking to MKFM, Tom, a WW2 veteran living in Marston Moretaine, said that he is currently walking 10 laps per day of his 25-metre long garden. “I’ve done 30 so far and I’ll have to do another 10 today," he added.

This is all to reach the target of completing the 2.5k distance (1.6 miles) before his birthday on 30th April.

Initially, Tom set the target of 100 laps but has since said that he wants to do even more. “I’m going to do more than that,” Tom continued. “I’ll do as many as I possibly can, and by the time of my birthday I hope I can do more."

Tom has since become a local hero, and hundreds of residents have donated money to support his birthday challenge. His target was £1,000, but now, nearly £8,000 has been donated by people all across the country.

Every penny raised will go towards NHS Charities Together, to support NHS staff and support workers during the coronavirus crisis.

The WW2 veteran has commended the NHS for the "incredible" service that he has received in the past, having been treated for a broken hip and skin cancer.

He now wants to give back to those working "so hard", who are "so tired" and are "really doing so well" during the current climate.

On his 100th birthday, Tom was due to celebrate by having a large party with 100 guests, but this has since had to be cancelled. Tom has said there will now be a little party with just  family to celebrate the amazing milestone.

Tom's family has recently set up a Twitter page so people can follow his journey. You can follow @CaptainTomMoore by clicking here
