Local family campaign to close dual carriageway crossovers in Milton Keynes following the death of their son

    Where the accident took place

The family of Ryan Ansell, who lost his life last year in a road accident, has launched a petition at a bid to close crossovers on grid roads in MK.

Ryan was tragically killed when his motorbike was involved in a collision with a white van on the V6 Grafton Street in July 2019.

Les Ansell, Ryan's father, said: "This could have been avoided for the sake of a few minutes extra in using the frequent roundabouts situated on the Milton Keynes grid system to turn around instead.

"Crossing over into a residential estate through a junction across a dual carriageway we believe has a high risk of [a] potential incident due to the nature of it being a 70mph speed limit. Would you be allowed to do this on a motorway? I think not."

As a result, Ryan's family has set up a campaign to close crossovers on dual carriageways "for the safety of road users" in MK.

In 2017, figures were released showing the most common causes of car accidents in Milton Keynes, with the most common being that the driver/rider did not look properly, causing 238 accidents. The second most common cause was the driver/rider failing to judge another vehicle's speed which caused 138 incidents in Milton Keynes.

Other common factors in Milton Keynes were the driver or rider being careless and reckless, bad turns or manoeuvres and the driver losing control.

Les continued: "With the increasing numbers of road users within the Milton Keynes area due to the extensive house-building being undertaken to provide for the ever-increasing population. These crossovers will only become even more dangerous to the road users.

"You could reduce the speed limits but this would be ineffective unless the police receive extra funding in order to increase their presence to enforce this."

A spokesperson from MK Council said: “We have closed some right hand turns on grid roads in MK following a road safety assessment based on the number and nature of the collisions which had occurred at those locations over a period of time.

“Our priority is to keep the road network safe for all users so we will always look at any contributing factors on the road environment that we can improve.

“We will continue to monitor each road traffic collision as part of our road safety process.”
