Latest pothole repair method trialled in Milton Keynes

A new time-saving technique used to repair potholes was trialed in Central Milton Keynes today (11/3).

First developed by a local company in Bletchley, the new infrared technology works by heating up the existing asphalt around the pothole, making the material soft enough to mix smoothly with new asphalt to fill back in the hole.

Using a wacker machine, the mixture is then compressed as it cools, leaving it to blend into the existing surface.

This new method is designed to be more efficient, using less material to fix the potholes and leaving a more seamless patch on the surface.

The road surface can then be driven over in as little as 30 minutes since the repair.

White chippings will be added into the road repair to maintain the original Centre MK look and feel. These chippings are only used in CMK road surfaces.

The repairs come as part of a wider CMK makeover taking place throughout March.

Makeovers include landscaping, the repainting of parking bay lines and fixing damaged underpass lights.

Councillor Emily Darlington, Cabinet Member for Public Realm said: "We've made an extra £50k available on top of the £100k already set aside for tackling potholes.

"We're always looking at how we can do as much as possible within our limited budget. This infrared technique will not only help to save on materials, which is good for the environment, but it also means we can fill more potholes too."

The pothole repairs will continue around the Centre MK area throughout March.
