Labour pledges wheelie bins for all Milton Keynes households

MK Labour is pledging to roll out wheelie bins to all households in Milton Keynes if they retain control of the council.

And the group says that the council would still retain weekly bin collections.

The pledge comes after an overwhelmingly positive response to the current trial, with over 80% of the public using the trial service being happy with it.

The trial was launched in October 2020, with thousands of households currently using four wheeled bins for their waste, instead of plastic bags. Each bin is colour coded as to what should go in it.

It has been a controversial topic, with some residents believing that four bins are not practical, but overall it has received a large amount of support.

Over three-quarters of residents on the pilot have told Milton Keynes Council they want to permanently switch to wheeled bins, with a majority finding that the use of wheeled bins made their streets cleaner and that it will lead to better recycling.

Labour believes that the pilot has been successful, and wishes to further expand should they retain control of the council.

Cllr Pete Marland, current Leader of the Council, said: “We are ambitious to be the Greenest City and by introducing wheelie bins we are making our city cleaner and greener, with more recycling and cleaner streets. If we retain control of MK Council we pledge to roll them out across MK.

“I was sceptical about wheelie bins as living in a terraced house there are access and storage concerns, but even people on the trial who were at first sceptical have been asking me if they can keep them – now the answer is clear, if Labour are successful in May then we’ll roll the scheme out to all MK.”

Labour is also pledging to continue the trial until the full scheme is rolled out in order to develop better alternatives for those in flats, inaccessible properties and people who need support, as these are the main areas of concern highlighted in the consultation.
