John Lewis in Milton Keynes thought to be safe as chain expected to close stores nationally

John Lewis in Milton Keynes is expected to remain open following reports of plans to close stores and slash jobs at the company nationally.

Sources at the department store say it is 'highly unlikely' that all 50 of the John Lewis stores across the UK will re-open again following the coronavirus lockdown.

However, the Milton Keynes store at The Centre MK has already re-opened to the public and is one of the flagship stores for the chain.

The Guardian has reported that stores which could close include sites at Watford, Newcastle and Newbury - although this is yet to be confirmed.

As well as store closures, John Lewis is expected to close one of its two headquarter buildings in Victoria in London.

The company also said that staff would most likely not receive an annual bonus next year.

It comes at a difficult time for retail locally - with the closure of TM Lewin at intu Milton Keynes announced earlier this week and the closure of Debenhams at Intu earlier this month.
