Local residents are being urged to help the Jo Cox Way cycle around the world

People are being encouraged to get on their bikes and pledge some miles to help the Jo Cox Way bike ride hit its 25,000-mile target - the distance needed to circumnavigate the world.

This pedal-powered initiative has been introduced by organisers to replace the Jo Cox Way’s usual five-day ride from West Yorkshire to London, also passing through Milton Keynes, which celebrates the murdered MP’s zest for life and passion for the power of community.

North Yorkshire business executive Sarfraz Mian, founder of the Jo Cox Way, explained: “The coronavirus pandemic means that our regular ride is not possible this year, but we still want to share the values that Jo championed and celebrate the importance of connection. Taking the Jo Cox Way down this slightly different path, with an exciting new format, allows us to do that.

“We are inviting people – seasoned cyclists and those who have only just started – to help us reach our goal by chipping in with their own cycling efforts. Reaching out like this is a great way to bring people together, applaud one another’s achievements, share our own personal stories and enjoy the immense pleasure to be had in the fresh air and outdoor space – while remaining socially distanced. We’re also welcoming those who would like to clock up the miles on a static bike or turbo trainer – it really is a case of the more, the merrier!”

The 60 cyclists who originally signed up to tackle the Jo Cox Way’s 288-mile journey, which winds its way through many towns and villages as it heads from north to south, will put their usual ride on hold for the year and join others in this global quest, pledging hundreds of miles between them.

People will be asked to pledge their cycling miles from rides taking place on any days between Wednesday 22 to Sunday 26 July, the dates of this year’s Jo Cox Way. Those wishing to take part should visit the event’s Strava group, Facebook page, or the Jo Cox Way website.
