Council employee is killed while trying to 'rescue' young boy from harm in Milton Keynes

There has been an inquest opened today (2/7) into the death of a man that was killed while reportedly trying to 'rescue' a young child from harm at a property in Milton Keynes.

The inquest opening heard that Richard James Woodcock, a 38-year-old highways officer for Milton Keynes Council, was killed at his neighbour's property in Two Mile Ash last Saturday (26/6).

It was reported by Detective Chief Inspector Stuart Blaik of Thames Valley Police that Mr Woodcock, who lived on Denmead, rushed to a neighbouring apartment after a woman's screams could be heard.

Two people fled but a young boy remained inside, according to police.

It was said that Mr Woodcock gained entry to the property in a bid to rescue the boy but the 38-year-old was subsequently killed. Police believe that 24-year-old Kelvin Igweani, the resident of the property, was responsible for the man's death.

Mr Woodcock was dead when armed police officers attended the scene. A post-mortem determined that he died from a "traumatic head injury".

Officers also discovered the young boy, who had serious injuries, and 24-year-old Kelvin Igweani who acted "aggressive" to officers.

It was heard that Kelvin Igweani was tasered by police but this was ineffective. He then "barricaded" himself in the main bedroom with the child, where it was heard that the child was crying and there were further sounds of an ongoing assault.

The inquest opening added that armed police identified themselves and made their way into the room, before tasering Mr Igweani and firing four shots.

Mr Igweani died from a gunshot wound to the chest.

The deceased 24-year-old is suspected of the murder of Mr Woodcock and the assault of the young boy, who has not been named.

Mr Tom Osbourne, a senior coroner from Milton Keynes, has opened an inquest into both of the deaths.
