How Milton Keynes City Centre will change in 2021 - and beyond

As we head into a brand new year across Milton Keynes, our City Centre skyline is set to change once again.

There are plenty of new developments set to pop up in the city centre over the next few years.

In March 2018, we told you about how the green light had been given to the new 'tallest building in town' (at the time) with a 14-storey luxury hotel planned to be built near John Lewis in the City Centre.

You have probably noticed development well underway with the two large lift shafts outside the Multi-Storey car park.

'Hotel La Tour', which at the time was due to open in 2020, will be the tallest building in the Milton Keynes City Centre, with a top floor viewing platform included as part of the plans.

Part of the new plans include a public viewing area and art installation on the top floor as well as leisure facilities, conference rooms and a rooftop bar and restaurant.

We had an update on this one a few months ago - with an opening date of 2022 now predicted.

Meanwhile, back in June 2018, details of another new hotel and multi-storey car park were unveiled, this time close to The Hub.

A 256 bedroom Marriott 'Moxy Hotel' is planned for the site, with Moxy currently boasting outlets in New York, London and Milan.

The rooms in the hotel are described as 'small but expertly designed' and the lobby is 'the place to be', according to travel website ShermansTravel.

The hotel is now expected to open in the summer of 2021.

Away from the hotel scene, and plans for 'New City Place' were revealed by MKFM back in July 2018 aiming to replicate the success of The Hub.

New City Place will be located on Midsummer Boulevard between The Hub and the Central Rail Station, opposite Wetherspoons.

Enquiries were being taken for the office space, on one side of the piazza, which will comprise of 16 floors and a total of 253,000 square feet of space.

A rooftop restaurant over two floors will sit on top of the apartment block, giving stunning views over Milton Keynes from 28 floors above ground.

There will also be an open public viewing gallery from the 29th floor of the second block.

We don't yet have a confirmed opening date.

We're also waiting for the planned demolition and re-development of The Food Centre.

Permission has been granted for the full demolition of the Food Centre and replacement with a mix of flats, car parking and shops.

At present, the old Sainsbury's and old Waitrose units both remain empty at the location.

The new plans are for 422 flats, of which 6% will be studio flats, 37% will be one bedroom flats, 47% will be two bedroom flats and 10% will be three bedroom flats.

Again, no opening date is yet known for the new development.
