How a Milton Keynes town made a small contribution to Joe Biden's inauguration today

The eyes of the world have been on the United States of America today as Joe Biden was officially made the President of the USA.

And as part of the inauguration ceremony, there were musical performances from international artists including Lady Gaga and Jennifer Lopez.

But one Milton Keynes town also made a small contribution to the occasion.

And that's because at one point during the ceremony, country singer Garth Brooks performed a live rendition of the hymn 'Amazing Grace'.

It was a spectacular performance of the hymn which was was written back in 1773 in Olney in Milton Keynes.

Local historians say the hymn was originally released as part of a book called 'Olney Hymns' which was co-written by the Reverend John Newton.

John Newton spent a total of 16 years living in Olney and his church services were so popular in the town that an additional gallery was added to accommodate all the extra people who came to hear him.

The book he wrote contained 347 other hymns as well as Amazing Grace - all of which were written by either John Newton or William Cowper who also lived in Olney for a period.

So there you go - a small Milton Keynes town making its mark at one of the biggest political events of the year.

You can read more about the history of Amazing Grace at the Cowper and Newton Museum website.
